Can Angel Studios keep making wins? Apparently, "Yes, they can."
Angel will be bringing the beautifully animated Charles Dickens' "King of Kings" to theaters on Easter of next year, 2025. It is based upon a short story he wrote about the life of Christ, published posthumously, The Life of Our Lord. Here is the trailer.
If I had known they were working on this, I would've been preaching it already... to the choir, and even to their domesticated pets at home. But this appears to be a long-gestated work that was held under wraps.
As I read the press release here for this news by Angel Studios, I was reminded that South Korea's MOFAC Studio was getting attention for this project earlier this year, but it had not yet attained distribution. What I missed was the big names that were attached to the film to play the voices in the film. Actors like Pierce Brosnan, Oscar Isaac, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, and Kenneth Branagh.
It was reported here by Ryan Gajewski of THR.com in March 2024, but the voice actor announcements came later.
But now Angel is being given the great privilege to carry it to theaters, and this is the big news for us here. This distribution plan is likely happening because Angel Studios has demonstrated their expertise in bringing faith-based films to American theaters (and now global markets) more successfully than many other faith-based outfits such as Sony/Affirm/PureFlix (although admittedly, Kingdom Story Company is competitive).
The traditional faith-based studios and distribution have mostly failed in this work, opting instead to focus on being video streamers, and I noticed this since so many of the better non-formulaic works go to Fathom Events for just one or two days instead of being distributed more widely. But Angel can do a wide release for weeks now, and worldwide.
Typically a few days of theaters cannot make the money back for distribution. This is like a dumping ground, and it is not a good sign for the future of a project if it cannot make it past that 1-2 days of theatrical. Write it off as a loss.
But now, this film could make our Easter weekend in 2025 lots of fun, since South Korea's MOFAC will be bringing us this delight to theaters and we will likely get a wide release around the country thanks to Angel!
