I'm not sure how hot it will be in Italy this summer, but it looks like the Devil will feel the heat as the story of Christ's resurrection takes center stage (Stage 22 in Cinecitta Studios, to be exact).
Delving into the story a bit from a National Catholic Register interview, Gibson alludes to a trip "into hell." He says, "I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, you’re in another realm."
But this isn't just any conventional retelling of the fall of Satan, or the standard Easter story, but it's written by long-time collaborator Randall Wallace, who wrote Gibson's Oscar award-winning Braveheart. And when appearing on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast in January, Mel described his script, funny enough, as an "acid trip," contributing to the idea that this film could very well shock many people when it comes out.
I'm ready for it!
Here is Gibson on Joe Rogan discussing the making and distribution of The Passion and how it changed Jim Caviezel.
Reportedly, Jim Caviezel will return as the Christ, Maia Morgenstern will return as Mother Mary, and Francesco De Vito will return as Peter. We do not have a release date set as yet, but it is expected to arrive sometime in 2026, more than 21 years after The Passion of the Christ made history. It still holds the title as the largest grossing independent film of all time.
This is also reported at Variety.

Let's hope Gibson hasn't lost his knack for powerful filmmaking, despite how long it has taken him to reprise this story and bring it to us, full of all the wonder and beauty that this story demands.
