I wonder if being appointed an ambassador to Hollywood means that we are treating that industry as a foreign nation? Maybe yes, maybe no, but it definitely makes a statement.
This kind of statement reminds me of the Hays Code, in the 1930's, which resolved to reform and improve Hollywood to meet the public's moral standards of decency, as groups like the 20 million-strong National League of Decency, boycotted the industry. Hollywood, as a new industry at the time, was really not reflecting the values of the country and instead had a lot of smut in it. But many people don't even know how bad Hollywood was in the 20's, or that this reform led to some great films, and even a golden age in Hollywood, beginning in the late 30's with films like The Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind.
These reforms actually made a difference.
Watch the discussion here on Cultural Warfare about the impact that the Hays Code had on Hollywood, and what the three ambassadors to Hollywood might be able to do to make a difference.
Without this knowledge I doubt that these men will make much of a difference, but we can always try.
Sky News reports on this here as well.
